The “Kid’s Birthday Party” Marketing Play

Remember when you were a kid?

Birthday parties, theme parks or school discos…

A lot of the time, the joy wasn’t only in the event itself:

It was what you left the event with.

I’m talking goodie bags, merch and other “bonuses” you’d score for showing up.

The funny thing about this is that it still applies to us as adults.

Especially when it comes to business.

There’s a reason why accessories and bonus products work so well in eCommerce:

They enhance the experience.

And this matters for two reasons:

1. It’s easy money for you as a brand owner

Sourcing low cost products, branding them and including them as upsells is one of the easiest ways to ramp up your average order value.

An extra $20 here and there will stack up your AOV fast – especially at scale.

2. It encourages consumption

The #1 way to get customers back for more (outside of having a genuinely good product) is ensuring consumption.

And that starts with making the experience better.

Take Ordinary Mushrooms for example.

One thing we’re looking at introducing is electric whisks.

Why?

Because making it easier to mix the powders into your morning cuppa will mean that customers will use more of the product on a regular basis (consumption).

This won’t just help our average order value in the short term…

It will impact our lifetime value in the long run, as people will consume more of the powders, and come back again to repurchase.

Another example could be the BBQ niche.

Let’s say you sell BBQs or premium meat rubs etc.

What better upsell than branded heat-resistant gloves, meat thermometers, or something as basic as an apron with your logo on it?

All of these things add extra joy to the process – which in turn encourages consumption.

Not only do accessory upsells and bonus products look good…

They feel good.

Just like when you were a kid.

It wasn’t only the party that you remembered:

It was the goodie bag you got on the way out.

Take this idea and apply it to your brand.
